Walter Charles DanceĀ OBEĀ (born 10 October 1946) is an English actor. He is known for playing intimidating, authoritarian characters and villains. Dance started his career on stage with theĀ Royal Shakespeare CompanyĀ (RSC) before appearing in film and television. For his services to drama, he was appointed anĀ OBEĀ byĀ Queen Elizabeth IIĀ in 2006.
He made his feature film debut in theĀ James Bond filmĀ For Your Eyes OnlyĀ (1981). He has since appeared in a string of critically acclaimed period films, includingĀ Michael CollinsĀ (1996),Ā Gosford Park (2001),Ā The Imitation GameĀ (2014),Ā MankĀ (2020), andĀ The King's ManĀ (2021). He has also appeared in the filmsĀ The Golden ChildĀ (1986),Ā Alien 3 (1992),Ā Last Action HeroĀ (1993),Ā Dracula Untold (2014), andĀ Godzilla: King of the MonstersĀ (2019). He made his directorial film debut with the drama filmĀ Ladies in LavenderĀ (2004), which he also wrote and executive-produced.
On television, Dance played Guy Perron inĀ The Jewel in the CrownĀ (1984), Mr Tulkinghorn inĀ Bleak HouseĀ (2005), for which he was nominated for aĀ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie,Ā Tywin LannisterinĀ Game of ThronesĀ (2011ā2015), andĀ Lord MountbattenĀ in the third and fourth seasons ofĀ The CrownĀ (2019ā2020), for which he was nominated for aĀ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
